The Story of Mick

Mick came to us on Christmas Eve.  The result of an idle conversation over a cup of tea at the community centre.  But like a stone thrown into a pond, the careless comment from John that he was interested - maybe someday - in, perhaps learning to train a sheepdog - sometime in the future - rippled out into the Universe.  The day before Christmas Eve, a friend from the next village came to the door, asking if he was still interested in a dog.  He had been shopping in town and met the man who had sold him his own dog, who had asked him if he knew anyone who was looking for a dog.  He said he thought he might...

And so, on Christmas Eve, John headed up the coast to have a look at the dog - he would see what he was like and if he was any good, then he might bring him back.  Yeah - right!  There was never any  question of maybes... Mick came home to us that very afternoon.

He has settled in really well - very obedient and no bother around the house.  He is devoted to John and goes everywhere with him if he can.  He even waits outside while John is in the shower.

And the other day, when John and  James had gone swimming, I found Mick lying over at John's side of the bed!  I think it is love - it's very cute.

He is very good around the croft and all the animals too. He will be learning to be a sheep dog, though - John has his sights set on the local trials in 2013.

He is an 18 month old Border Collie.  He was originally owned by the man whom we got him from.  He was then sold to another man as a working dog, but after a while the new owner became ill and was unable to exercise the dogs.  He then returned Mick to the original owner (DT), saying if he was any good to give him to someone who wanted him, and if not, just to have him put down.  He is a good dog, though, and thankfully he found his way to us.  DT is a lovely man, and is very keen to help John and Mick in their training, so they will be going back for a couple of shepherding lessons once the weather improves. He has already had a run out with our friend and his dog, around some sheep. He is very quick and understands all the basic commands - stop, down, come here, away to me, etc.

And he is a lovely dog - aren't you Mikey boy? He says he is very pleased to meet you all and to be sure and look out  for him in future posts.

  2. Aww how cute. We have 2 cats right now, but both Duncan and I grew up with labs (strangely both black and both called Sam!), and we haven't discounted a dog joining us at some point. Your wee guy is lovely, I hope he wins some rosette's for you (eventually lol).

  4. He is a gorgous animal! He reminds me of my husband's German Short Hair, Amy, in his devotion to his master! If Amy were a woman we would have problems around here :)

Aw bless. What a wonderful relationship they have. I am sure he will be devoted to James in time. Our border collie which we inherited from my FIL, just loves his boy, my youngest son, now though FIL on his rare visits home (he is in a care home) is still number one. I love border collies, they are sensitive souls but so smart.

  20. I think that's what they call Serendipidy. He looks lovely - you are lucky though that he sleeps on the floor - our dog jumps right up and sleeps in the middle of our bed. We spend the night shifting around so as not to disturb her. Sure there is something wrong there!

OH WOW ! I just have a feeling Mickey is going to be the Main Attraction , or at least a close second to darling James. I think the story of how you came to have him is pure providence.

  28. Thanks to you all for welcoming Mick with such lovely comments.
Mel - so good to see you face popping up now and again xx
marjorie - Baby is a Belted Galloway crossed with a Dexter. She is still a heifer, although she is getting on a bit now - just over 2 years old. You can read about her arrival in the June 2011 posts. John has been on an AI course, so we are hoping to have some dexter calves next Spring. There are no Dexter bulls on the island. so AI is the only way to go if we want our own milker eventually. xx

  29. I think I'm IN LOVE with that dog! Would love to have a Border Collie but it would such a disservice to a working dog to have to live in my very indoor world.

  30. Lovely post! And what a lovely look in his eyes Mick has got. I really like herding dogs, they are so clever and such good company. I have one myself, but a cattle herder, a 'västgötaspets', I believe it's called Swedish Vallhund in English?

  31. Sounds like the perfect addition to the family! Let us know how the training goes on-I've always been curious about how it's done.

What a great story! I think animals know when they have been rescued. I look forward to hearing about Mick's progress, and eventually the Sheepdog Trials! The only thing I know about those are from watching Babe, so maybe you can inform me a bit more? (I presume you don't have to play Saint-Saens while herding sheep, e.g.!)

  40. He's a nice one! I'm a bit prejudiced towards BC's as we have our own - Kebbie - watcher and herder of all things here on our farm.
