Snow is falling - all around
Snow has been falling on the island this week. Great fun when you are 5 years old, but after a while we retreat to snuggle up indoors where it is warm.
But what's this? More snow - inside? Just a couple of flakes to start with...
and then a veritable snowstorm! I had great fun trying out various crochet snowflake patterns for my garland. I will update my ravelry page soon with the links.
The tiny ones worked out best for what I had imagined. I crocheted 15, using half a ball of Rooster almerino from my stash. Such a fun quick wee project.
Reading wise - well, John and I are currently training as First Responders with the Ambulance service. Volunteers from the community who will attend medical emergencies right away and carry out basic first aid, or life support procedures, until the paramedics arrive. We are 20 minutes drive away from the hospital, and our 3 ambulances have a lot of area to cover, so First Responders can play an important role in the scattered communities. Tonight is our last training night, and there is a wee test at the end...
In between I have been thoroughly enjoying this light Christmassy romance.Completely predictable, as all romantic novels must be, but very atmospheric, great fun - and lots of delicious sounding food.
So nice to have a finished object to show at Ginny's Yarn Along. Do drop by and see all the lovely yarny goodness there. Stay warm now. xxx
Eta: The snowflake garland pattern can be found here. I blocked my snowflakes and sprayed them with starch. I have added all the snowflakes to my Ravelry page

they're just lovely Jacqui - there's nothing better than homemade Christmas deccies. I CAN"T wait for some snow, if it'll just hold on in the North for another two weeks... =)
ReplyDeleteLove your crochet! :) Yes, we have snow too, rather a lot actually. And high winds. :( Oh well, perfect weather for crochet! xx
ReplyDeleteThe first responder scheme sounds excellent. Could make a huge difference in isolated, scattered communities, I'm sure. Hope the wee test went well, too. No doubt, Jnr is loving the snow - our lot loved the waist-high stuff in Sweden in the garden.
ReplyDeleteIt is very cold and windy here on the Welsh border, but still no sign of snow. The snowflake garland looks beautiful strung across your mantlepiece, one of my goals next year is to master crochet, it does seem to keep eluding me.
ReplyDeleteOH is a first aider where he works, and is called upon quite often to administer medical attention........good luck with your test to qualify as a First Responder. x
I am so very envious of your snow! It is once again going to be in the mid 70's here. It's very hard living in the deep south sometimes.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you are going to be a first responder. I wonder how it works here. I live about 30-45 minutes from town [depending on traffic] so it might be worth checking out.
Your snowflakes look great. I tried learning to crochet flowers, but failed.
Have a great day and good luck on your test.
xx
I love the snow flake garland!!
ReplyDeleteThe temperatures have dropped a lot here too, but no snow. Maybe I should crochet some too?
What a lovely garland.
ReplyDeleteI am envious of your snow :) We are supposed to get some tonight. I hope it is true-the crochet is lovely and festive!!
ReplyDeleteThese are verty similar to the Christmas stars I have been crocheting. Love them.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful crocheted snowflakes, and they look great as a garland.
ReplyDeleteI bet you and John will be great first responders with your back ground too. The island is fortunate to have you guys on hand.
Lovely garland!!! ♥♥♥ the snow (that we don't have--and no sign in the near future)
ReplyDeleteIt's a very busy time of the year to be training for first responder--I admire your dedication! good job! I'm proud of you (as my 3 year old grandson used to say!)
oh lucky you, SNOW !! and also the crochet snowflakes are great.
ReplyDeleteI have just found your treasure of a blog...and it delights me!! :D
ReplyDeleteLucky you...we had a bit of snow this morning, but mostly it's been RAIN all week. I love your snowflake garland!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your tips - and sent at a time of night when I was deep in slumber. I am working my way through the instructions!
ReplyDeleteThat's quite a juxtaposition of reading matter. A little light-hearted Christmas reading sounds just right.
Love the snowflakes! If only I crocheted!
ReplyDeleteSnowflakes! I did a snowflake afghan for our babysitter last year, and after so many snowflakes I think it will be quite some time before I can bring myself to make any again. I do love yours, though, and I love that last shot of the garland. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGreat snowflakes. What a fab idea - really Christmasy!!!
ReplyDeleteOooh do send some snow down to these parts! :-) Rye and myself are both desperate for snow!
ReplyDeleteLove the crochet snowflakes :-) I've been making a few too, but had to stop as I'm so behind with my makes...ooops. One year I will start early enough.... maybe. ;-)
I love those snowflakes!! I will be checking out your rav notes hoping to see the patterns : ) Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeletewow, they are so sweet, I'm no good at following a pattern, but I'm very tempted to have a go after seeing yours.
ReplyDeleteLovely snowflakes/garland Jacqui! We received our first snow too..got snowed in for a couple days...9 inches all at one go!

Loving the snowflakes, beautiful. Hope your test went well X
ReplyDeleteSnow flakes are amazing, as is your role as a first responder, good on you! I like a little light hearted romance every now and again too!
ReplyDeleteMuch love.
Love your snowflakes! My grandma crocheted tons of snowflake and angel ornaments...I always think of her when I see them on our tree :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful snowflakes, how long did they take?I would really, really like to find time to make some here :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments on my poorly laptop post btw, unfortunately it wasn't just the dial up speed broadband that was the connection, as proven by the fact that the older peoples PC/laptops were zooming along as usual. All sorted now though ;)
xx
Every year I vow to crochet a few snowflakes. I think living in a hot climate has deterred me (that and my lack of crochet skills). Perhaps I need to try at least one this year. Good luck with your exam.
ReplyDeleteWhat pretty little snowflakes. One of the delights of winter is having a pile of books to read and the time to read them.
ReplyDeleteI hope the exam went well. First Responders are worth their weight in gold.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT..... ohhh and Pinned it for good measure!
ReplyDeleteYour crochet snowflakes are gorgeous! Such a natural looking garland.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the exam! Very good of you to include yourself into this first aid volunteering team.
Enjoy the snow outside. Here in the south of Britain it`s mild and still green. I`m hoping to see some snow over Christmas, when we are travelling to Germany to be with my parents.
A lovely winter garland. We are supposed to be experiencing summer at the moment but it's more like winter as I sit here in a jumper! Very unseasonal. That book sounds wonderful. I could with something k=like that just now, we can't get much done outside as it's also raining.
ReplyDeleteYour garland is simply beautiful. And how fun to have snow! None in Aberdeen though I hear it is nearby in all directions...
ReplyDeleteLovely snow - the cold wet stuff and the woolly stuff too!
ReplyDeleteI daren't show Imogen the pictures, she would be too excited - so wishing for some again this Winter for her.
Lovely crochet, lovely scenery, keep warm.
ReplyDeleteI love the snowflake garland idea! Just the idea I needed for some inspiration, thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the indoor snowstorm!! Boy, when you take something up you just soar don't you? You crochet like an old pro!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Debbie
Wow, love those snowflakes, can you link to the pattern you used, you have inspired me to learn crochet and I've almost finished my first project, now crochet plans are stacking up!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlice
Thank you everyone. The snowflake garland is just so easy - really a few minutes each. I am about to edit the post and show the link, but they are all on my ravelry page now.
ReplyDeleteThe test was fine - had our last training night, now just have to wait weeks for our disclosure notices to go through, so it will be the end of January before we het our yellow and green fluorescent jackets!
xx
The snowflake garland isn't just lovely..it's beautiful and reminds us all of what an Old Fashion Christmas looks and feels like. I really love it! ~ Barefoot Mama
ReplyDeleteOh the snowflakes are wonderful! And the garland even better!
ReplyDeletei'm very impressed with your crocheting skills and your garland is lovely. What a good idea to have First Responders and how kind of you to offer to help.
