There is always plenty going on in this croft kitchen - certainly always washing up, but - we do appreciate our food here.
. It's not always home cooking though. We have the most amazing food shops on the island, so it is nice to have some time out and feast on fantastic locally made produce.
And this is seriously the best iced cream ever.
And we take our ice cream very seriously.
There has been pie!
Really loving this book by Ashley English, and I think, going by the results so far, we will certainly be celebrating a year of pies here.
and to explore other possibilities - oh yes!
Tallow has been rendered for cooking and other projects, and beet kvass has been made. I'm not sure how this is supposed to taste - this is a bit salty, but pleasantly so - and improving by the day!
I concoted a recipe for applesauce muffins, which were a huge hit, but I've forgotten what I did! It was a basic muffin recipe using melted butter, not oil, and I layered the apple sauce in the middle of the mixture, so we would all get a good mouthful of the cinnamon spiced apple.
Yes - it is one of my favourite places, this kitchen of mine. Good food, a nice chilled glass of something while prepping dinner, and some lively tunes to dance around to. Och, come on - lets have a wee ceilidh!
Oh yum! Your kitchen looks like a wonderful place to be. I think a "glass of something" is mandatory while puttering about in such a manner. And that ice cream....Seriously? Oh dear!

Your beet kvass sounds just right. I need to get busy and ferment a few jars myself. I love a glass after I have been working in the hot sun.
I gave Ashley's book to my mother in love for Christmas, along with a hand made pie dish. Unfortunately I only ordered one copy of the book and now need to place another order for myself. I really want to try the Fig Pie!
I can imagine the kvass being very refreshing on a hot day! I will certainly be making more xx

O my goodness! Lemoncurd Icecream! That sounds absolutely delicious. We live in Caithness and I've never heard of such a thing. Crikey I'm salivating now, I want some of that Ice cream.

I forget what I do too when I improvise in the kitchen...oh well. It's to be expected when inspiration hits. I love the ice cream enjoying photo, he is growing up fast, but in that photo he is staying a child!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I was this 'on it' in my kitchen ... i go through fits and starts never quite filling the cupboards with homemades ... but lemon curd is deffiitly on tomorrows agenda after reading this! And nettle soup which the kids are non to optimistic about! love and full moon light x

ReplyDeleteHi Julie - haven't noticed any but best bet would be M & Co down in town, or possibly Sarwars as a long shot. I tend to use the school system or online like Direct Scoolwear or M&S online. Murdo Maclean's should have ties for everywhere. Hope your appointment goes well x
Deleteok, thanks, someone said that the co-op did clothes. Well, if not, will have to stick to the internet then. It is nice to see stuff before you buy though. Is the toy shop still there, by the roundabout? The kids definately want to go there. xx
ReplyDeleteThe co-op have a Peacocks in store, but they dont do school clothes. Lots of other nice stuff at the moment.

Couple of nice delis in town - The Good food boutique is my favuorite, and Wee W's is great now - so much cool stuff now.
