Meet Baby - a 20 month old Dexter/Belted Galloway cross -
and this is her Mum - Delia - a 10 year old Dexter. They might....just might be coming to stay with us in a few weeks. So many things to sort out first, but fingers crossed. Watch this space..
They look beautiful. Do you plan to breed from them?

ReplyDeleteAlthough a farmer friend of ours says if you are going to get a little cow, you may as well get a big cow, as the work involved is the same, but the return on the bigger cow is greater. I suppose it depends on what you are going to do with them.

Those are beautiful. Can remember going to a country fair a few years back and seeing Dexter cattle and thinking how lovely they were. I hope you get them, keeping fingers crossed!! xxxx
ReplyDeleteDexters are wonderful -we always thought them to be the ideal smallholders cow - though I often hankered after a bigger variety (on the basis already suggested here) and favoured the Red Poll, which seemed to me to be a good, hardy, dual-purpose breed. Good luck with the coos - as they say in Sweden: Lycka till!

ReplyDeleteWow! Exciting times. Personally I think I would be a bit intimidated by handling cattle, but I'm sure there is a nack to it. I do have a bit of a soft spot for black cows though!

Things are slowly moving ahead on this one - a definite maybe you could say. We had always planned on the Dexter - mainly for Dairy, but also adding to self sufficiency in meat. Also, it is a close relative of the Kerry cow, which was traditionally the black cow of the Celts. It just appeals, and a bit of romance never goes wrong. We only have a small croft, and would be wanting to graze our cattle as much of the year as we can. Lots of reasons. We will breed.

Wow your Delia is huge compared to our heifers. Ours are more lean looking. Our short leg might fill out to be stocky but our other hiefers are very dairy looking. She is beautiful. Joel Salatin is huge here. We are having a guest speaker come to our fair to teach the rotational grazing techniques.
